About

Thread Up Oxford.

We are committed to reducing textile waste in our local community by creating opportunities to think, act, and use (or reuse) materials in a better way.

We prevent nearly 2 tons of textiles from entering the landfill each month!

As a community, what if?

Each individual in Oxford cut down on sending a 2 pounds of textile waste (2 pair of jeans or 8 t-shirts) to the landfill?

That’s 46,070 lbs (23.04 US tons) we can collectively keep from landfills in a single year

Our mission is to create a more sustainable lifecycle for textiles, keeping unneeded waste out of landfills and giving new life to used textiles.

Our vision is to build communities dedicated to creating circulatory cycles for textiles that are reused endlessly, constructing sustainable communities.

Our Story

What Once Was an Experiment

In the wake of COVID-19, our founder, Shana, conducted a large-scale material donation as an experiment. The first processing center and storage facility started in her basement.

A Community of Change

The community rallied around this experiment at local events and the operation outgrew the basement, forcing Thread Up Oxford to its own facility.

Who We are Today

Within a year, Thread Up Oxford outgrew its first functional facility, eventually opening their second retail-only location where Uptown Threads is located today!

How we contribute to reducing textile waste.

In 2018, the EPA estimated that the United States alone produced 17 million tons of textiles and discarded 14 million tons. The majority of textiles are used in the clothing that we wear and most will eventually end up as waste. Textiles show up everywhere: home decor, car upholstery, medical supplies, toys, and much more.

Thread Up Oxford is a new nonprofit in the Oxford, Ohio area dedicated to reducing textile waste that ends up in a landfill from within the local community. As the organization continues to serve our community and our mission, a solid foundation has already been laid to build upon through a variety of efforts:

  • Serving local social service organizations to support the needs of our community.

  • Educational speaking engagements and other forums on sustainable wardrobes and how our organization can help individuals, businesses, and other organizations reduce textile waste in the community.

  • Volunteer events to support the sorting and distribution of textiles (primarily clothing).
